Rise of the Tomb Raider is getting its fifth patch today, and it's a big one. Developer Nixxes Software says this patch will let the game take advantage of the DirectX 12 API and Nvidia's voxel ambient occlusion (or VXAO) technology.
Nixxes says the move to DX12 will let it 'spread our CPU rendering work over all CPU cores, without introducing additional overhead.' The developer says that using DX12 will allow RoTR to more effectively feed fast graphics cards with work in visually demanding parts of the game. Using the same scene as a reference on a PC with a GeForce GTX 970, the game ran at 46 FPS in DirectX 11 mode and 60 FPS with DirectX 12. Nixxes is excited about the potential of DirectX 12 asynchronous compute and multi-adapter modes, too.
We have just released the fifth PC patch for Rise of the Tomb Raider, build 1.0.638.6. This patch adds support for two major new technology features into the game, and by doing so allows for both great new visuals, as well as improved performance on specific systems. The Nixxes Software, responsible for the PC version of Rise of the Tomb Raider, released the long awaited patch that implements DirectX 12, the latest API of Microsoft. Together with it, also comes the Nvidia VXAO (Voxel Based Ambient Occlusion), which the company calls “the most advanced ambient occlusion solution in the real world time.”. I wonder when Nvidia will let us know the DX12 plan for our cards. I still run a GTX 580 Lightning in my entertainment PC and it is still mint. I would like a free performance upgrade though. But I will say we are not missing out on much yet. Rise of the Tomb Raider DX12 patch has not been good on my Titan X.

- Just tried DX12 with patch and see no benefits from it, Riva doesn't play nice with DX12 so all I gain is screen tear. Don't think the 970 is supported by this anyway but thought I'd post this in case people with similar GPUs rush to download the patch expecting better performance, it probably won't.

The arrival of Nvidia voxel ambient occlusion in Rise of the Tomb Raider is a bit more mysterious. Nvidia hasn't documented this feature in its online reference materials yet, but it appears to be a subset of the company's work on voxel global illumination (or VXGI). Voxel global illumination can produce highly realistic lighting effects in a scene, so we'd expect a better-looking ambient occlusion effect in this case. Nixxes says the feature will only work on Nvidia Maxwell graphics cards, and only then in the game's DX11 mode.
